Nathan Fielder graduated from one of Canada’s top business schools with “really good grades”, and he spends his time helping struggling small businesses to turn their fortunes around. Or at least that’s what they think. In reality, Nathan is a comedian – a brilliant troll. What he really does is come up with the craziest business ideas his comic brain can muster then convinces these businesses to go along with it. It’s hilarious.
Have a look at this example – a frozen Yogurt shop attempts to attract customers with a controversial new flavour – shit. Literally shit.
The premise of Nathan for You – while clearly inspired by the likes of British show ‘Brass Eye’ – has its own strain of genius growing through it. Fielder’s greatest skill is navigating the waters of a deliberately awkward conversation with what looks like no effort at all. Even you as the viewer will find yourself asking “is he being serious?”
Our favourite moments have included a skit where Nathan lures youths into vandalising posters by deliberately creating suggestive images of himself – in one instance he even leaves a pen next to one and a sign saying “DO NOT DRAW A PENIS ON THIS POSTER”. He then waits for a teen to take the bait, before pouncing like and awkward predator.
Nathan’s antics often attract media attention. At one point he opens a full coffee shop with Starbucks branding, but classifies it as a ‘museum’ so that he’s not legally liable for using their brand. It makes for a hilarious global news story and some ridiculously entertaining conversations with legal advisors, all of whom Nathan continually trolls with his subtle wit.
Nathan for You has 18 total episodes to date, with a new season currently being shot in LA.
